Where to Stay in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica
Updated: Sep 11
Choosing where to stay in Manuel Antonio can have a big impact on your Costa Rica vacation.
The area offers everything from traditional hotels and resorts to private villas and vacation rentals tucked into tropical surroundings. You can stay closer to the beaches and national park, choose the conveniences of nearby Quepos, or find a quieter home base that gives your group more room to relax.
There isn't one perfect choice for everyone.
The best place to stay in Manuel Antonio depends on who you're traveling with, how much space you need, whether you'll have transportation, and what kind of Costa Rica experience you want.
Here's what to consider before booking.
Manuel Antonio or Quepos: What's the Difference?
Manuel Antonio and Quepos are close neighbors, but they offer different vacation experiences.
Manuel Antonio is known for its rainforest-covered hills, beaches, wildlife and, of course, Manuel Antonio National Park. Much of the area's vacation lodging is scattered along the road between Quepos and the national park or tucked into the surrounding tropical landscape.
It's generally the better fit for travelers who picture their Costa Rica vacation involving rainforest views, wildlife, beaches and a tropical atmosphere.
Quepos, meanwhile, is the area's working town and home to Marina Pez Vela. You'll find restaurants, shops, services and access to fishing and boating activities there.
For many visitors, the answer isn't really Manuel Antonio or Quepos.
Stay where the atmosphere and accommodations fit your group, then enjoy both during your vacation.

Hotel or Vacation Rental?
This is probably the biggest decision for families and groups.
Hotels can be an excellent choice, particularly for couples and travelers who value on-site services, restaurants, housekeeping and resort-style amenities.
But as the size of your group increases—or the length of your trip gets longer—a private vacation rental starts offering some significant advantages.
Hotels May Be Better If You Want:
Daily housekeeping
An on-site restaurant or bar
Resort services
A front desk or concierge
A shorter stay
Separate accommodations for members of your group
A Vacation Rental May Be Better If You Want:
Multiple bedrooms
More privacy
A full kitchen
Shared living areas
Private outdoor space
A private pool
Room for everyone to spend time together
More of a “home in Costa Rica” experience
Neither is automatically better.
The question is how you want to experience Manuel Antonio.
Why Families Often Prefer a Vacation Rental
Traveling with children changes what matters in accommodations.
Being able to make breakfast before heading out for an early wildlife tour can be considerably easier than getting everyone dressed and into a restaurant first thing in the morning.
A kitchen also means you can keep drinks, snacks and familiar foods available throughout your stay.
Separate bedrooms give parents and children their own spaces, while a living room provides somewhere for everyone to spend time together.
And then there's the pool.
After several hours hiking through Manuel Antonio National Park or spending the day on an excursion, sometimes the best family activity is simply coming home and jumping in the pool.

Why Groups May Want a Private Villa
Groups have slightly different needs.
When several couples, friends or extended family members travel together, booking multiple hotel rooms can fragment the vacation.
A private villa lets everyone share the same home base while still having separate bedrooms.
Morning coffee becomes something you enjoy together. Someone can cook breakfast while someone else is planning the day's adventure. At night, the group has somewhere to gather rather than disappearing into separate hotel rooms.
For many groups, those unplanned moments become as memorable as the excursions themselves.
Location Matters—but Not Always the Way You Think
It's easy to look at a map and assume you should simply book whichever accommodation appears closest to Manuel Antonio National Park.
But distance isn't the only consideration.
Ask yourself:
Will we have a rental car?
Will we use private transportation or taxis?
How often do we expect to visit the beach?
Do we want restaurants within walking distance, or are we comfortable traveling to dinner?
Would we rather be in the middle of everything or have somewhere quieter to return to?
The answer can be different for every group.
A property slightly removed from the busiest tourist areas can offer more privacy and a peaceful atmosphere while still providing convenient access to the area's attractions.

Don't Forget About the Rainforest
One reason people come to Manuel Antonio is that the destination is more than a beach town.
The rainforest is part of the experience.
Depending on where you stay, mornings might begin with tropical birds rather than traffic. Scarlet macaws may fly overhead. Monkeys can move through nearby trees. You may even spot a sloth if you're lucky.
Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed—and wild animals should always be observed respectfully—but choosing accommodations surrounded by tropical vegetation can make the Costa Rican environment part of your vacation even when you're doing nothing at all.
That's one of the qualities we particularly love about Villa Capuchin.

What Amenities Should You Look For?
It's easy to get distracted by beautiful photographs when comparing places to stay.
Look beyond them.
For a week-long family or group vacation, consider whether you'll have:
Enough bedrooms for everyone
Enough bathrooms for your group
Air conditioning where you need it
A full kitchen
Reliable Wi-Fi
Comfortable indoor living space
Outdoor living areas
Laundry access
Parking if you're renting a vehicle
A pool
Convenient access to the activities you plan to enjoy
Also look closely at how the property actually accommodates your group, not simply the maximum number of guests listed.
Eight people technically fitting inside a property isn't the same thing as eight people being comfortable there.
Consider How You'll Spend Your Downtime
This gets overlooked surprisingly often.
Most visitors research what they'll do away from their accommodations.
But on a seven-day vacation, you're going to spend a meaningful amount of time at your rental or hotel.
There will be mornings before excursions, afternoons when everyone is tired, evenings after dinner and possibly a rainy tropical afternoon when plans change.
Ask yourself:
Would we enjoy spending several hours here if we weren't going anywhere?
That's particularly important for families and groups.
A private pool, kitchen and comfortable living areas aren't just amenities on a listing. They're part of the vacation.
Where Villa Capuchin Fits
Villa Capuchin is designed for travelers who want a little more space and independence than a traditional hotel room provides.
Located in the Manuel Antonio area, the villa offers a tropical home base for families and groups who want to explore during the day and have their own private place to return to afterward.
Villa Capuchin features:
3 bedrooms
2 bathrooms
Accommodations for up to 8 guests
Private pool
Full kitchen
Comfortable indoor living areas
Outdoor space surrounded by tropical scenery
Access to the experiences of Manuel Antonio and Quepos
It's particularly well suited to families, groups of friends and travelers planning a longer stay who appreciate having a kitchen, private pool and common areas.
Villa Capuchin won't be the right accommodation for everyone.
If you want a large resort with room service, multiple restaurants and a traditional hotel experience, a resort may be the better choice.
But if your idea of Costa Rica is exploring Manuel Antonio during the day and coming home to your own tropical retreat, that's where Villa Capuchin shines.
How Many Days Should You Stay in Manuel Antonio?
You can certainly experience highlights of Manuel Antonio in a few days.
But if your schedule allows it, staying longer lets you enjoy the destination at a much better pace.
Instead of trying to combine the national park, beach, wildlife and adventure activities into a couple of exhausting days, you can spread them out and leave time for the pool, leisurely meals and spontaneous discoveries.
For an example of how to structure a longer visit, see our 7-Day Manuel Antonio Itinerary: Beaches, Wildlife & Adventure.
Before You Book
Before choosing accommodations, make a short list of the things that actually matter to your group.
Don't begin with the property.
Begin with your vacation.
How many people are traveling?
How many bedrooms do you realistically need?
Will you cook?
Do you want privacy?
Is a pool important?
Will you rent a car?
Are you planning several excursions?
Do you want nightlife and restaurants nearby, or somewhere quieter at the end of the day?
Once you know those answers, choosing where to stay becomes considerably easier.
